Watch out Windows XP/Vista/7 !

Image via Wikipedia
I have been a Microsoft Windows user for the longest time. Part out of satisfaction (that it does a good (not perfect) job at what it is doing), necessity (it came with the PC I bought and was not an additional cost) and convenience (it was there, installed, ready to go (at home and work)). BUT, there were the issues of usage – crashes, slowness, incompatibilities, restrictions – which a lot of others may have experienced in different ways.
I have been experimenting with Linux LiveCDs for a while, and seem to have finally found one that fulfills satisfaction, necessity and convenience without any cost – gOS from thinkgos.com. I downloaded the ISO file, burned it on CD, rebooted and within 30minutes was up and running. gOS booted pretty quickly, the install took care of all the resizing and partitioning, and restarted the computer in a very responsive and visually appealling new environment with all the relevant software installed (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.). I did this for the desktop and the laptop and in both cases it went very smooth.
I can highly recommend gOS.

Blogging, Collaboration and Reputation Management

Image by Looking For Fish Tacos At ELI 2006 via Flickr
What if blogging:
-has a lot to do with collaborating between experts of a certain matter to exchange thoughts and experience and communicate the results to the related professional community ?
-has a lot to do with creating and maintaining one's professional reputation as an expert for a certain matter and results in creating formal and informal professional social networks ?
-would be the means by which information and knowledge would be shared within an organization, e.g. blog management instead of content management ?
-is mixed with Wikis and each blog posting is a wiki page that allows to evolve the topic discussed ?
Food for thought on Friday, the 13th.

KMWorld2008 sharepoint as a collaboration tool
KMWorld2008 James Robertson about collaboration and publishing
1. the use as a 'shop' front-end (publishing like) for information to share with others outside the group
2. the use of a 'workshop' back-bone (collaboration like) for information to work on and change within the group.
Interesting approach that is worth further investigation. Metadata is a very critical component of it all.

Interesting use of new communication capabilities for Health and Wellness purposes:
Pretty good idea to use your social connection to help you achieve a specific goal. Motivation and the feeling of not fighting the pounds all by yourselve may just be making the important difference. Definitely different approach from Nintendo's WiiFit :-).

U.S. Air Force lets Web 2.0 flourish behind walls

Blogs, wikis and personal profiles promote information sharing, but some fear they could jeopardize operational security
July 17, 2008 (IDG News Service) The U.S. Air Force is using Web 2.0 technologies to better support its missions despite wariness about security, a civilian technology official of the service
The new techniques, including blogs, wikis and personal profiles, are coming out of an initiative by Air Force Knowledge Now (AFKN), a resource provided on the Department of Defense (DOD) intranet. They're helping service members and civilian employees find the information they need more quickly and are now being shared with members of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marines, according to Randy Adkins, director of the Air Force's Center of Excellence for Knowledge Management said last week.
IMHO, this article nicely points out the benefits, as well as the concerns about the use of Web2.0/Social Media capabilities in organizations. There is easy sharing, connecting to other experts and a more collaborative approach to working online together, and there is need for the building of social networking and sharing awareness.

Knowledge Drain in Africa ?

Africa Facing Brain Drain
The United Nations is increasingly worried about Africa's brain drain and has warned that it could have dire consequences for the continent. The continuous stream of its professionals to Europe and the Americas is affecting Africa's development and prosperity. "In 25 years, Africa will be empty of brains," warns Dr. Lalla Ben Barka of the UN Economic Commission for Africa. The exodus of highly trained individuals from developing African countries to industrialized nations is not a new phenomenon. However, the magnitude of the growing problem demands urgent action as the consequences of brain drain threaten to stunt the overall development of the continent. According to the International Organization for Migration, Africa has already lost one-third of its human capital and is continuing to lose its skilled personnel at an increasing rate. It is reported that there are now more African scientists in the United States than on the whole of the African continent. Africa's share of global scientific output has fallen from 0.5 percent in the mid-1980s to 0.3 percent in the mid-1990s.

What is one of the key competitive advantage of a country / large enterprise
Yes, it is innovation and knowledge. Large enterprises are like small countries, they have similar issues to consider. Generally countries only advance if they create enough strength in certain areas to make them sell more 'stuff' than others. In order to sell more stuff, one has to understand the market needs, innovate it fast, build it very cost efficient and bring it to all corners of the world to sell it quickly (before the competition catches up).
Food for thought:
- where are most innovations created today ?
- who has the most increase in basic science students ?
- who has the ability to create product fast, quick and in masses ?
There MAY BE the risk of outsourcing core competencies that a nation will not be able to learn from - since they are outsourced - which may for the time being be cost efficient, but MAY BE detrimental to the long-term development of a countries capabilities.. again.. just a thought...

Knowledge Workers, Collaboreation and personalization will be critical to a companies success in the future
So how is this prediction different from other predictions that had said that KM will change everything ? And then it had not happened ?
Looking around market activities, company strategies, development of professions, job market and other developments - it all seems to steer towards a global economy that has to be flexible and adaptive. Products will need to be customizable to a customers specific needs. Inventing, creating, marketing and support will need to be functions provided by someone specialized in this area. All of this can only be achieved if we break down the paradigm of having to be in the same phyical location in order to work together effectively. Technoloy (wireless, video communication, etc.) is developing rapidely towards allowing us to communication and collaborate anywhere with anybody with an increasing set of functionality. With this in mind, the article makes sense.
I would be interested to hear about your point of view.

Stan Garfield (KM at HP) presents at KMChicago
The March 14th KM Chicago meeting will play host to Stan Garfield of Hewlett-Packard's Worldwide Consulting & Integration Knowledge Management organization. He will talk about the KM program in the consulting organization.

He joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1983 and launched Digital's first knowledge management program in 1996. Stan helped develop the corporate KM strategy for Compaq. He holds a degree in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis.
The HP Services Consulting & Integration KM Program: The mission of the HP Services Consulting & Integration KM Program is to increase the reuse of intellectual capital to:
Increase win rate
Drive down sales and delivery costs
Increase engagement quality
This presentation will explain the details of the HP Knowledge Management Program, including people, process, and technology components. Detailed examples of the following tools will provided
Knowledge Advisors
Project Team Collaboration
Project Profile Repository
Communities of Practice
Knowledge Briefs
Specialized Repositories
HP and Digital Equipment Corp. each started a KM program for their consulting businesses in 1996. Through the subsequent years, the organizations changed frequently, culminating in the merger of Compaq and HP in 2002.
The newly-merged consulting & integration business had to deal with different cultures, KM systems, and personnel. The KM program has continued to experience significant change, including system migrations, team membership, and leadership.
Our challenge has been to move from an emphasis on technology to an approach that balances people, process, and technology. We are also managing a demanding list of projects with a very small team.
For information on how to attend this meeting, please visit the KMChicago weblog.

Accenture presents: Knowledge Management in the Asia-Pacific region
Please join the KM Chicago group on Tuesday, February 14th, 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Allstate location in Northbrook, IL - South Plaza, G Auditorium for a presentation by
Tanya Brincat and Myrna Binamira, Accenture
Knowledge Management in the Asia-Pacific region
Scarcely a day goes by when we do not hear about the current and future economic impact of China and various other countries from the Asia Pacific region. Accenture has had a knowledge management presence in Asia since the mid 1990s. Two key people from their respective operating groups will discuss the evolving role of knowledge management at Accenture and their roles in developing and delivering knowledge services in Asia and around the world. Both of these women have been associated with knowledge management at Accenture for more than a decade. They have served their operating groups very ably during that time and have made many contributions to the global knowledge management efforts at Accenture. They and their respective teams have contributed to millions of dollars in consulting revenues over the past few years. Living and working in Asia they have a unique perspective on the cultural, language and technology barriers encountered by consultants in the region. Come get an Asia Pacific view of the successes, challenges, and evolving approaches that are faced by a global organization trying to deliver knowledge management services.
Speakers
Tanya Brincat (Financial Services Knowledge Management, Accenture)
Tanya Brincat has been involved in Knowledge Management since its inception at Accenture in 1992. She was seconded to Accenture's WHQ in Chicago in October 1992 where she spent 4 years working on the design, development and rollout of the core suite of databases to be made available on Accenture?s knowledge management system, the Knowledge XchangeTM.
Since 1996 Tanya has served as a Knowledge Manager for the Financial Services Operating Group (Financial Services is one of the largest industry groups in Accenture with 12,000+ practice personnel globally; $3.4bn revenues in FY2005). After spending one year with the Financial Services Knowledge Management team in New York, Tanya returned to her native Australia where she currently serves as the Financial Services Knowledge Management lead for Asia Pacific (responsible for the provision of knowledge equipping and knowledge harvesting services to the FS practice in Asia Pacific) and the Global Head of Banking Knowledge Management (responsible for managing all Banking related knowledge capital on Accenture?s Knowledge XchangeTM and for developing all internal Banking communications).
Prior to her Knowledge Management assignment at Accenture Tanya spent 4 years as a Management Consultant in Accenture's Change Management practice, where she specialized in instructional design. Tanya holds a Bachelor of Behavioral Science from La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia).
Myrna A. Binamira (Director, Government Knowledge Network, Accenture)
Myrna A. Binamira joined Accenture in 1995. Prior to that she was working for the Philippine Government and served for almost 18 years, the last 7 of which was as the CIO for the Department of Agriculture. As the CIO, she was in charge of the Department's IT and IS Program nationwide, and headed the Department's Computer Center. After that Government stint, she joined a private systems integrator company where she found herself selling Microsoft and Lotus Notes software. Sales turned out to be not her cup of tea so after a year of doing that, she went back to job searching and found this ad for Andersen Consulting.
They were looking for a Director for their Government Knowledge Center. Needless to say, she got the job and had to start the organization from scratch. That was the most challenging job yet ever she had to face, but definitely also the most rewarding. Not very many people can actually single-handedly choose the people who will work for them. She has since then managed the KM Program of the Government Operating Group of Accenture and continues to do it with the same passion as when she started.
Tanya Brincat and Myrna Binamira will join us via webinar.

Web users judge sites in the blink of an eye
A study by researchers in Canada has shown that the snap decisions Internet users make about the quality of a web page have a lasting impact on their opinions.
So, you better update your website with some catchy design if you want people to stick around - is that what it means ? Shall we focus less on content ? Again, my believe is that a middle-way is the best way to go. No compromise on the quality of content, but improving the end-user interface experience is an increasingly important component of information technologies nowadays.
What does that mean ? I think it means that people are fed up with un-intuitive, complex, hard-to-use interfaces. It means that people work harder and longer and do not want to deal anymore with anything that makes it more difficult. My two cents.

KM Jobs on the rise
As a KM professional, I am harvesting information on a daily basis, filter it and review whats left for impact on things I know about. This includes the job market around Knowledge Management. Following the postings, I see more and more KM positions being offered. There are still quite a few out there that mis-use the term Knowledge Management, but in general it looks like the industry is slowly getting to the point where the recognition sets in (in the mainstream) that the only way to do more (increase performance, competitiveness or other values) with less (money, resources, time), is to utilize the knowledge that the organization contains within their employees better (->Organizational Intelligence on Wikipedia).
Self-promotion again ! -> InsightKnowledge provides a discussion forum with postings of jobs in the KM area. Check them out.

Enable project teams to efficiently communicate and collaborate - and they will succeed; enable networks to form and adapt and structure themselves to the purpose and goal given - and they will be ideally prepared to succeed.
Power teams, organizational networking, business network analysis - keywords for things that are waiting to happen.

ConceptWikis - the next step from blogging to wikis to conceptwikis
Blogs are very popular, because they allow everybody to be a publisher of their thoughts and opinions with text and video and audio and reach a worldwide audience. What it does not do, is to provide a efficient capture mechanism for knowledge to be re-used, shared and worked with.
Wikis are becoming very quickly very popular. They provide the capability of blogging, but also allow for knowledge to be very easily capture as single pages, automatically linking to eachother with keywords. One can capture thoughts similar to how one is thinking, link pages they way one remembers things, and can discover someones thoughts they way the person thought about it and captured it. What wikis do not do, is to capture the relationship between the linked pieces of information. The relationship itself is an important part of the information between two knowledge entities, like in 'ThisInformation is part of TheOtherInformation'.
ConceptWikis are the next step. Based on the ease of use of wikis, it provides the capability to capture the relationship between to pieces of wiki information, more closely representing how knowledge is formed and linked to eachother.

MMORGs as business tools ?
This article discusses how a MMORG (massive multiplayer online roleplaying game) could be usable in a business environment. It discusses the behaviours people show in those games and how they apply/are similar to real world behaviour.
I think that a MMORG that reflects a business environment would be interesting. It could serve the purpose of virtual meetings (documents/presentations could be shown online, in vitual meeting rooms, people represented by avatars, the document actually visible), for getting to know people (virtual watercooler, virtual dating, etc.), or even virtual training sessions.
I think the problems with this environment for business is that people perceive it as play without consequences. If a MMORG would be applied to real world problems, there would be real consequences.

Not new but cool: Peer News Publishing
Not controlled by the media, I believe this has the potential to bring the news back to the people. People know first what is going on, there would not be any filtering, its a democratic process by which something gets published.
Worth keeping an eye on and setting up an RSS feed !

Report: Federal spending on info sharing (KM) to rise
http://www.upi.com/SecurityTerrorism/view.php?StoryID=20051109-065845-5387r
The article points out the Army's KM efforts as a good example. Can federal information sharing finally get its act together ? That will not depend on the technology spendings, but on the change of culture ! Washington, watch out not to waste money here. Cultural change is the toughest part of a successful KM solution.

KM Standards are for sale
http://www.standards.com.au/catalogue/script/Details.asp?DocN=AS0733769306AT
Will this be a wake-up call for the profession of KM where everyone is their own standard ? Will this bring the OZ KM movement to the frontline of the profession ?
Doubtfully. ANSI or IEEE are well known standardization committees and until the australian KM standards pass that hurdle, it may only have limited success.
Doubtlessly, I think that it shows the need of the profession and the industry for standards, for something common that people can learn, understand and apply without taking $$$thousands of dollars of proprietary training and certification courses. PUBLIC standards will allow the market to grow faster, learn faster and build stronger and consistent offerings than what currently is available.

Knowledge Tidbit: Windows Indexing Service
For those of you that use the MS Indexing Service as a search engine on your home computer, know this:-the service can query connected network computers, if the UNC option in the search paths are pointeding to them (\\computername), instantly creating a network search service.
-by using a '!' in front of a query in your regular startbutton/search function it will utilize the indexing service pre-indexed database - causing the searches to be really quick.
-you could also just download goodle's desktop search and its plugins to do the same. while this is great, it also creates large index files (for those who have storage issues).

Personal Knowledge Management - the use of webfolders
Useful tidbit of information: WebfoldersI hardly know anybody who is using webfolders on their desktops. Here is some information that may convince people to give it a try.
Webfolders are really useful. Within a Windows environment (starting at windows 2000), one can setup a webfolder by adding a new network place (I won't explain the details here, but please visit http://ww.insightknowledge.com, passcode: insightfor more information).
Once setup, a webfolder behaves like a regular folder. One can browse, work with files, and the likes.
BUT really helpful is a webfolder when working with Microsoft Office or OpenOffice. Both programs allow to open and save documents into such a webfolder. This means one can create, share and edit documents in place over the internet. It will ask for login/password if security is applied to the folder. Using the building versioning of the office suites, this is great for sharing documents.
Now it gets a little bit more techincal - for those who are interested to host their own webfolders (like your home computer).
Needed on the (server) receiving side is a webdav compliant webserver. Zope is an easy and powerful way of getting this setup. Apache allows this fucntion too, but needs more configuration work. Please feel free to contact me for consult you on the setup and use of a zope server.
A side effect of this setup is that everything is http based and does not create any problems with a firewall.
Don't hesitate to contact me for questions: http://www.insightknowledge.com and use LIVEHELP.

Fewer students major in computer - USA TODAY 5/23/5
http://km.ittoolbox.com/news/dispnews.asp?i=129587&t=4&a=KM
Why am I mentioning this article you ask ?
Knowledge Management really utilizes computers to make the masses of data, information and potential for knowledge manageable.
If you don't believe this - ask yourself: Who does research without GOOGLE nowadays ?
Computers are like weapons and nuclear science. They can be used for good and bad. With the purpose of automation, safety and cost-cutting measures, they take on more and more functionality.
Knowing that fewer and fewer people will know how to 'tame the beast', should get us thinking.
Some will say, (specifically potential students): "but the market crashed and the future is not certain".
It will be important to understand that while these uncertainies do exist, flexibility in the area of computers is essential. Computer systems, architecturs, programs and programming languages are changing faster and faster.
There may not be a straightforward answer, but a criteria for a successful future will need to include that the general understanding of computers, their impact on everybodies daily life and the responsibility of using and not misusing them, will need to increase dramatically.

America's Eroding Knowledge Edge - Posting on Yahoo News
Congratulations Mike Ruettgers !
I wholeheartedly agree with your article on the erosion of knowledge in America.
If one takes an objective look at the state of education across the states..
If one looks at the statistics of the skill levels of the nations youth..
one must start thinking: We may be overrun by other countries, who invest more in managing their knowledge and experience.
India is investing heavily in Knowledge Management. Discussion groups and forums are filled with indian experts and those who soon will become expert.
The world is continouing to outsource business processes. One can argue that we don?t outsource the knowledge that goes with it. But if one does not perform a process any longer, how can one gather experience from it?
It will be essential to find ways to turn this trend around.
Possible action may include:
-teach children conceptual thinking and problem solving, not only facts
-teach consequential thinking and impact analysis
-promote sharing of knowledge as the new way of being a hero
-guide business to create knowledge management solutions for outsourcing that bring the experience back to the employees
-.. and others
