3 Stages of a Company's Social Integration

3 Stages of a Company's Social Integration

Exactly where social media lives within a company depends largely on what goals have been set for social media. And these objectives are in turn usually a function of how far along a business is on the adoption curve.
The argument about marketing or PR “owning” social media is shortsighted. It’s more important to identify future objectives and develop a culture of social thinking inside the organization.
As social behaviors and technologies become more embedded into all aspects of business, smart companies are looking as far up the adoption curve as possible. This means getting beyond what often passes for social media marketing to a more holistically social way of thinking about marketing, customer service, stakeholder management, employee engagement, product innovation, risk management and much more.
That’s a lot to chew on, so for simplicity, here’s how I see the journey, broken down into three rough stages of maturity (though actual adoption cycles of the elements of social media will differ for everyone).

1. Develop Channels

In the first stage of maturity, organizational goals for social media may be unclear, and linked to marketing or PR outcomes. A basic presence on relevant social platforms that is informally managed and/or created on an ad-hoc “campaign” basis will be expected to generate reach for awareness purposes. As this first stage develops, internal advocates and/or agency partners may help implement a more formal process for publishing content, managing conversations or aligning with other marketing activity. Influencer outreach may extend traditional PR tactics, and further extend conversations and awareness.
At this stage there are usually a small number of internal advocates fitting in social around their other duties, owned by marketing with input from PR (or vice versa).
Many companies stop at this level of participation, because the second stage of social media maturity means getting past the channel mentality and starting to apply real social thinking.

2. Streamline

Goals such as community building, reputation and risk management, advocacy and social CRM enter the lexicon. In larger companies, disparate activities in different business units or geographies are brought together under a common strategy.
By now there is some organizational weight (and an annual budget) behind a company’s social media effort. Marketing and PR are working together closely, with one discipline taking ownership. In some cases a clearly defined split of responsibilities can work, but it’s usually harder for all parties to deliver high impact work in this framework. Either way, it’s essential that input and representation from sales, customer service, legal and operations are part of the organizational model for social. A specialist agency can help balance stakeholder interests and advise on best practices at this stage.
The end of this second stage may see specialist social media roles being created internally, and gradual adoption of social tools and techniques across the business may start to occur.

3. Social Becomes Native

This leads into the third, and most evolved stage of social media adoption. Objectives for social media will permeate additional areas of the business: social intelligence, internal collaboration and efficiency improvement, social insights and innovation through to advanced advocacy programs, consumer and influencer collaboration, even integration with legacy technology.
By this stage, social media will cease to be centered in marketing and instead seep into the cracks of the company and its culture.

Tablet Usage Explodes, Changes Digital Habits

“Tablets are one of the most rapidly adopted consumer technologies in history and are poised to fundamentally disrupt the way people engage with the digital world both on-the-go and perhaps most notably, in the home,”

Read more: http://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/176445/tablet-usage-explodes-changes-digital-habits.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+online-media-daily+%28MediaPost+%7C+Online+Media+Daily%29#ixzz1xIg3sTIM

So, what does that mean ? Are there any lessons to be learned ??

IMHO:

  • smartphones are great and portable, but the screens are just TOO small
  • tablet typically also provide a longer battery life
  • finger interaction is easier - it's just to difficult on small screens

Five Ways to Run Better Virtual Meetings - Keith Ferrazzi - Harvard Business Review

Five great advises to get virtual meetings running smoother. All of us who have been holding a lot of webinars, conference calls and online collaboration sessions can appreciate those:

    1. Use video: Yes, you cannot hide !
    2. Do a "Take 5": 5 minutes everyone has to talk. No lurking !
    3. Assign different tasks: It's a meeting - assign responsibilities
    4. Forbid the use of the "mute" function: YES YES YES. Nothing fails more than a good joke and nobody laughs :-)
    5. Penalize multitaskers. Again, its a meeting. Unless it is for informational purposes only - pay attention !

University of Texas researchers have developed a sophisticated new mapping tool showing where vulnerability to climate change and violent conflicts intersects throughout the African continent.

More than a year in the making and part of a $7.6 million, five-year Department of Defense grant, the Climate Change and African Political Stability project culls data on riots, civil unrest and other violent outbursts dating back to 1996. It overlaps with information about climate-change [more: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=us-defense-department-develops-map-future-climate-chaos]

Interesting post on Knowledge Management in small and medium-sized businesses

http://www.greenchameleon.com/gc/blog_detail/km_strategy_for_small_medium_sized_businesses/ discusses the definition and application of a KM strategy for small and medium sized business. While I do like the basic approach (change culture, embed sharing, provide platform), IMHO the key is to identify how expertise makes a difference in the sm/med business environnment. The approach needs to be appropriately adapted. A medium sized business with multiple locations can benefit from sharing sessions, knowledge capture processes and the likes; a small business in one location not quite as much. Biggest benefit is really achieved when sml/med businesses work together to build a knowledge network for delivering their goods/services. That level of integrating expertise requires the most effort, but also has the highest potential for making a big impact - once one can answer the question - whats in it for me ? Again, my $0.02.

    Watch out Windows XP/Vista/7 !

    gOS Rocket E desktop

    Image via Wikipedia

I have been a Microsoft Windows user for the longest time. Part out of satisfaction (that it does a good (not perfect) job at what it is doing), necessity (it came with the PC I bought and was not an additional cost) and convenience (it was there, installed, ready to go (at home and work)). BUT, there were the issues of usage – crashes, slowness, incompatibilities, restrictions – which a lot of others may have experienced in different ways.

I have been experimenting with Linux LiveCDs for a while, and seem to have finally found one that fulfills satisfaction, necessity and convenience without any cost – gOS from thinkgos.com. I downloaded the ISO file, burned it on CD, rebooted and within 30minutes was up and running. gOS booted pretty quickly, the install took care of all the resizing and partitioning, and restarted the computer in a very responsive and visually appealling new environment with all the relevant software installed (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.). I did this for the desktop and the laptop and in both cases it went very smooth.

    I can highly recommend gOS.

best guesses on blogging and tweetering

let me throw out some assurancetion and see if anybody agrees or disagrees with them: -blogging is good for exploring and documenting more complex thoughts, experiences and matters -twitter is good for all the random strikes of genius that happen during the day -like in most cases, most tweeds only have limited value -its all about becoming more mobile. could the rise of 3G netbooks bring blogging back to the front.. or will the masses of basic txt enabled phones keep the capabilities at twitter par ? hmm.. Blogging, Collaboration and Reputation Management

    What if blogging:

-has a lot to do with collaborating between experts of a certain matter to exchange thoughts and experience and communicate the results to the related professional community ?

-has a lot to do with creating and maintaining one's professional reputation as an expert for a certain matter and results in creating formal and informal professional social networks ?

-would be the means by which information and knowledge would be shared within an organization, e.g. blog management instead of content management ?

-is mixed with Wikis and each blog posting is a wiki page that allows to evolve the topic discussed ?

Food for thought on Friday, the 13th.

KMWorld2008 James Robertson about collaboration and publishing

James Robertson from StepTwoDesign makes a good point (with a strong australian accent :-) ) about the use of a groups/department/projects use of a collaboration environment (could be sharepoint) in two different ways:
    1. the use as a 'shop' front-end (publishing like) for information to share with others outside the group
    2. the use of a 'workshop' back-bone (collaboration like) for information to work on and change within the group.

Interesting approach that is worth further investigation. Metadata is a very critical component of it all.

Blogs, wikis and personal profiles promote information sharing, but some fear they could jeopardize operational security
July 17, 2008 (IDG News Service) The U.S. Air Force is using Web 2.0 technologies to better support its missions despite wariness about security, a civilian technology official of the service
The new techniques, including blogs, wikis and personal profiles, are coming out of an initiative by Air Force Knowledge Now (AFKN), a resource provided on the Department of Defense (DOD) intranet. They're helping service members and civilian employees find the information they need more quickly and are now being shared with members of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marines, according to Randy Adkins, director of the Air Force's Center of Excellence for Knowledge Management said last week.

IMHO, this article nicely points out the benefits, as well as the concerns about the use of Web2.0/Social Media capabilities in organizations. There is easy sharing, connecting to other experts and a more collaborative approach to working online together, and there is need for the building of social networking and sharing awareness.

    Knowledge Drain in Africa ?

Blank map of AfricaImage via WikipediaJust some obvious thoughts.. Africa is huge (11,608,000 sq miles to be exact.. see more here). Its got huge economic problems.. Tell me, why would an educated scientist stay there ? Yes, in the long-run and on a larger scale, the economic and scientific power of Africa can be enormous, but it has yet to find its 'killer application' for the world market (what replication and continious improvement is in Japan, manufacturing power in China, innovation and engineering power in Europe).. what could it be for Africa ?

    Africa Facing Brain Drain
The United Nations is increasingly worried about Africa's brain drain and has warned that it could have dire consequences for the continent. The continuous stream of its professionals to Europe and the Americas is affecting Africa's development and prosperity. "In 25 years, Africa will be empty of brains," warns Dr. Lalla Ben Barka of the UN Economic Commission for Africa. The exodus of highly trained individuals from developing African countries to industrialized nations is not a new phenomenon. However, the magnitude of the growing problem demands urgent action as the consequences of brain drain threaten to stunt the overall development of the continent. According to the International Organization for Migration, Africa has already lost one-third of its human capital and is continuing to lose its skilled personnel at an increasing rate. It is reported that there are now more African scientists in the United States than on the whole of the African continent. Africa's share of global scientific output has fallen from 0.5 percent in the mid-1980s to 0.3 percent in the mid-1990s.

What is one of the key competitive advantage of a country / large enterprise

Yes, it is innovation and knowledge. Large enterprises are like small countries, they have similar issues to consider. Generally countries only advance if they create enough strength in certain areas to make them sell more 'stuff' than others. In order to sell more stuff, one has to understand the market needs, innovate it fast, build it very cost efficient and bring it to all corners of the world to sell it quickly (before the competition catches up).

    Food for thought:

    - where are most innovations created today ?

    - who has the most increase in basic science students ?

    - who has the ability to create product fast, quick and in masses ?

There MAY BE the risk of outsourcing core competencies that a nation will not be able to learn from - since they are outsourced - which may for the time being be cost efficient, but MAY BE detrimental to the long-term development of a countries capabilities.. again.. just a thought...

Knowledge Workers, Collaboreation and personalization will be critical to a companies success in the future

Now here is an interesting article. A study of over 1000 CxO's projects that Knowledge Workers, Collaboreation and personalization will be critical to a companies success in the future.

So how is this prediction different from other predictions that had said that KM will change everything ? And then it had not happened ?

Looking around market activities, company strategies, development of professions, job market and other developments - it all seems to steer towards a global economy that has to be flexible and adaptive. Products will need to be customizable to a customers specific needs. Inventing, creating, marketing and support will need to be functions provided by someone specialized in this area. All of this can only be achieved if we break down the paradigm of having to be in the same phyical location in order to work together effectively. Technoloy (wireless, video communication, etc.) is developing rapidely towards allowing us to communication and collaborate anywhere with anybody with an increasing set of functionality. With this in mind, the article makes sense.

I would be interested to hear about your point of view.

Stan Garfield (KM at HP) presents at KMChicago

HP Services Consulting & Integration KM Program (Mar 14th)

The March 14th KM Chicago meeting will play host to Stan Garfield of Hewlett-Packard's Worldwide Consulting & Integration Knowledge Management organization. He will talk about the KM program in the consulting organization.

The meeting will be held from 5-7 pm at both Factiva in the Loop and at Allstate in Northbrook. Stan will be joining us via webinar from Detroit. See location and connection details in the right navigation bar.

Bio: Stan Garfield is responsible for Worldwide Consulting & Integration Knowledge Management for Hewlett-Packard. He joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1983 and launched Digital's first knowledge management program in 1996. Stan helped develop the corporate KM strategy for Compaq. He holds a degree in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis.

The HP Services Consulting & Integration KM Program: The mission of the HP Services Consulting & Integration KM Program is to increase the reuse of intellectual capital to:

    Increase win rate
Drive down sales and delivery costs
    Increase engagement quality
This presentation will explain the details of the HP Knowledge Management Program, including people, process, and technology components. Detailed examples of the following tools will provided

    Knowledge Advisors
    Project Team Collaboration
    Project Profile Repository
    Communities of Practice
    Knowledge Briefs
    Specialized Repositories
HP and Digital Equipment Corp. each started a KM program for their consulting businesses in 1996. Through the subsequent years, the organizations changed frequently, culminating in the merger of Compaq and HP in 2002.
The newly-merged consulting & integration business had to deal with different cultures, KM systems, and personnel. The KM program has continued to experience significant change, including system migrations, team membership, and leadership.
Our challenge has been to move from an emphasis on technology to an approach that balances people, process, and technology. We are also managing a demanding list of projects with a very small team.

For information on how to attend this meeting, please visit the KMChicago weblog.
