So, what does that mean ? Are there any lessons to be learned ??

IMHO:

• smartphones are great and portable, but the screens are just TOO small
• tablet typically also provide a longer battery life
• finger interaction is easier - it's just to difficult on small screens

Five great advises to get virtual meetings running smoother. All of us who have been holding a lot of webinars, conference calls and online collaboration sessions can appreciate those:

1. Use video: Yes, you cannot hide !
2. Do a "Take 5": 5 minutes everyone has to talk. No lurking !
3. Assign different tasks: It's a meeting - assign responsibilities
4. Forbid the use of the "mute" function: YES YES YES. Nothing fails more than a good joke and nobody laughs :-)
5. Penalize multitaskers. Again, its a meeting. Unless it is for informational purposes only - pay attention !

Interesting post on Knowledge Management in small and medium-sized businesses

While I do like the basic approach (change culture, embed sharing, provide platform), IMHO the key is to identify how expertise makes a difference in the sm/med business environnment. The approach needs to be appropriately adapted. A medium sized business with multiple locations can benefit from sharing sessions, knowledge capture processes and the likes; a small business in one location not quite as much. Biggest benefit is really achieved when sml/med businesses work together to build a knowledge network for delivering their goods/services. That level of integrating expertise requires the most effort, but also has the highest potential for making a big impact - once one can answer the question - whats in it for me ? Again, my $0.02.

I have been a Microsoft Windows user for the longest time. Part out of satisfaction (that it does a good (not perfect) job at what it is doing), necessity (it came with the PC I bought and was not an additional cost) and convenience (it was there, installed, ready to go (at home and work)). BUT, there were the issues of usage – crashes, slowness, incompatibilities, restrictions – which a lot of others may have experienced in different ways.

I have been experimenting with Linux LiveCDs for a while, and seem to have finally found one that fulfills satisfaction, necessity and convenience without any cost – gOS from thinkgos.com. I downloaded the ISO file, burned it on CD, rebooted and within 30minutes was up and running. gOS booted pretty quickly, the install took care of all the resizing and partitioning, and restarted the computer in a very responsive and visually appealling new environment with all the relevant software installed (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.). I did this for the desktop and the laptop and in both cases it went very smooth.

I can highly recommend gOS.

best guesses on blogging and tweetering

let me throw out some assurancetion and see if anybody agrees or disagrees with them: -blogging is good for exploring and documenting more complex thoughts, experiences and matters -twitter is good for all the random strikes of genius that happen during the day -like in most cases, most tweeds only have limited value -its all about becoming more mobile. could the rise of 3G netbooks bring blogging back to the front.. or will the masses of basic txt enabled phones keep the capabilities at twitter par ? hmm.. josh bernoff held a very interesting speech about the use of social media and its use in the industry, here with a special focus on NFPs and NGOs. Key message was that one has to be clear about your objectives. for some areas it is a must. make sure that once you start with social media, it may change the way you are working. What if blogging:

-has a lot to do with collaborating between experts of a certain matter to exchange thoughts and experience and communicate the results to the related professional community ?

-has a lot to do with creating and maintaining one's professional reputation as an expert for a certain matter and results in creating formal and informal professional social networks ?

-would be the means by which information and knowledge would be shared within an organization, e.g. blog management instead of content management ?

-is mixed with Wikis and each blog posting is a wiki page that allows to evolve the topic discussed ?

Food for thought on Friday, the 13th.

KMWorld2008 sharepoint as a collaboration tool

Michael Sampson put together a compelling case of the more in detail weaknesses of Sharepoint. He concludes that Sharepoint is great for sharing documents, but lots of other capabilities dont go all the way to being more useful, than disappointing. Consolidation of calendaring between outlook, sharepoint and windows mobile being one example. Here is his blog, including comments on this conference
